In this issue of ONTRAC we start to explore some of the impacts of the global recession on development – and take in examples from Asia and Latin America. Brian Pratt provides an overview of effects on NGOs and CSOs involved in development that have already become apparent – some new, others accelerated by the recession – and considers how donors and international NGOs have been responding to the economic downturn.
Dr Rajesh Tandon then looks at the situation in Asia – painting a picture of a changing terrain in south Asia for civil society as a result of impacts from the recession intertwining with pre-existing changes in funding trends across the region. Teobaldo Pinzas talks about ‘the end of an era’ for many major European NGOs in Peru – with the global recession deepening the already critical situation threatening the survival of Peruvian CSOs. Several survival strategies are being devised and implemented, but it seems clear that important changes in the NGO sector of Peru are inevitable.
The final article outlines six different business models which are common within the development sector, and looks at how their funding and structures affect the way that they respond to times of economic downturn. It argues that it is time that there is more thought within agencies to their own structures and business models, given that there will be further major changes in the NGO political economy in the future.
